The 30-Second Body Scan That Changed My Life

Let me tell you about the most boring superpower.

It's not exciting. It doesn't require equipment. You can't post it on Instagram for likes. But it changed my life.

The 30-second body scan.

Here's what happened. I used to wake up with neck pain. Not a sharp injury. Just a dull, grinding ache that followed me everywhere. I tried massages. I tried stretching. I tried sleeping on different pillows.

Nothing worked.

Then someone said, "When does your neck start hurting? Not in the morning. The day before."

I thought about it. My neck didn't hurt when I woke up. It hurt after I said yes to things I didn't want to do. After I stayed late at work. After I agreed to family dinners, which I hate.

The pain wasn't the problem. The pain was the symptom. The problem was that I couldn't feel my body saying no until it was already screaming.

That's where the body scan came in.

What is a body scan?

It's exactly what it sounds like. You scan your body. Head to toe. You're not trying to change anything. You're just noticing.

Jaw? Tight or soft?

Shoulders? Up or down?

Breath? Shallow or deep?

Belly? Hollow or full?

Pelvis? Braced or released?

Thirty seconds. That's it.

The first time I did it, I realized my jaw was clenched. Not just a little. Clenched like I was chewing rocks. I had no idea. I'd been walking around like that for years.

Why it changed my life.

Because once you notice, you can't un-notice.

I started doing the body scan before every request. Someone asked me for a favor. I paused. Scanned. Jaw? Tight. That's a no. Shoulders? Up. That's a no.

I didn't say no at first. I just noticed. But noticing was the crack in the door.

Over time, I started listening. Jaw tight meant "no." Shallow breath meant "no." Hollow belly meant "no."

And when I said yes anyway, I knew exactly what I was doing. I was choosing to betray my body. That awareness was uncomfortable. So I stopped.

How to do the 30-second body scan.

You can do this anywhere. Standing in line. Sitting at your desk. Lying in bed.

Close your eyes if you can. If not, just soften your gaze.

Start at your jaw. Is it tight? Are your teeth touching? Let me guess. They are. Most people's are.

Move to your shoulders. Are they up by your ears? Can you feel the muscle tension from your neck to your shoulder blade?

Move to your breath. Is it high in your chest? Shallow? Are you holding it?

Move to your belly. Does it feel hollow? Tight? Nauseous?

Move to your pelvis. Are you bracing? Tucking under?

That's it. Thirty seconds. You're done.

A real example.

Last week, someone asked me to take on a new project. My mouth started forming "sure." I paused. Did the scan.

Jaw? Tight. Shoulders? Up. Breath? Gone.

I said, "Let me think about it." Then I said no.

My neck didn't hurt the next day. That's a win.

Your turn.

Do the body scan right now. Seriously. Pause reading. Scan. Jaw. Shoulders. Breath. Belly. Pelvis.

What did you notice?

Now do it before every request today. Someone asks. You pause. You scan. You notice.

You don't have to say no. Just notice. That's enough for today.
